Space Maintainers for Kids in Oakland, CA
Montclair Pediatric Dentistry is a boutique pediatric practice that offers space maintainers for kids in Oakland, CA. Founded by board-certified pediatric dentists Dr. Lina Paek and Dr. Rebecca Hsieh, the practice draws on 20 years of their combined clinical experience.
When your child loses a tooth earlier than expected, our team evaluates the situation and fits a custom space maintainer to hold the correct spacing until the permanent tooth is ready to come in.
- Holds the correct spacing after an early tooth loss
- Custom-fitted for your child’s mouth
- Removed once the permanent tooth is ready to come in
Does Your Child Need a Space Maintainer?
Not every early tooth loss needs a space maintainer, but a few signs are worth a closer look:
- A visible gap where a tooth came out early from decay, injury, or infection
- Neighboring teeth starting to lean or drift into the open space
- Permanent teeth coming in crowded or at an angle
- A noticeable change in chewing or speech after a tooth is lost
- One side of the mouth losing a tooth earlier than the other
If your child lost a tooth that was already loose and on track to fall out anyway, that’s usually just normal development. The situations above are the ones worth an evaluation.
A permanent tooth that never develops at all is a different situation from losing a baby tooth early, and it’s handled differently. If X-rays show a permanent tooth is missing, we’ll talk you through the options.
The Benefits of Space Maintainers
Losing a tooth early doesn’t have to mean bigger problems down the road. Here’s what a space maintainer actually does for your child.
Holding the Right Spacing
When a tooth is lost early, the teeth around it can drift into the gap before the permanent tooth is ready to come in. Left alone, that drift can crowd out the space the permanent tooth needs. A space maintainer holds that spot open, so the permanent tooth has room to erupt where it actually belongs.
Simple to Live With
Most space maintainers need nothing more than regular brushing and the usual check-up schedule – nothing extra for you to manage day-to-day. We monitor it at each visit and remove it once the permanent tooth is ready to take its place.
Types of Space Maintainers
The right type depends on which tooth was lost and how your child’s mouth is developing. At Montclair Pediatric Dentistry, we place fixed space maintainers, which stay cemented in place until the permanent tooth is ready to come in, so there’s nothing for your child to remove or lose.
Band and Loop
A small metal band fits around a neighboring tooth, with a wire loop that reaches across the gap to hold the space open. It’s the most common option when a single baby tooth is lost early. We make it chairside, so it’s fitted right at the visit with no impressions and no waiting in a lab.
Distal Shoe
When a baby molar is lost before the permanent molar behind it has come in, a distal shoe extends slightly below the gumline to guide that permanent molar into position as it grows in.
What to Expect and How Long It Lasts
Getting a space maintainer usually takes one visit. We fit and adjust the appliance so it’s comfortable and out of the way of normal biting and chewing. If your child needs a type of space maintainer that requires impressions, we’ll refer you to an orthodontist.
Our team carefully evaluates each case to determine if a space maintainer is necessary. We consider factors such as which tooth was lost, the development stage of the permanent tooth, your child’s age and dental development, and the position of surrounding teeth.
How long your child wears a space maintainer depends on when the permanent tooth comes in. We check it at every visit and remove it once that tooth is ready to take its place.
Why Families Choose Montclair for Space Maintainers
Dr. Paek and Dr. Hsieh evaluate each case individually, rather than automatically placing a space maintainer after every early tooth loss. If your child’s tooth was already on track to fall out, we’ll tell you that too, instead of recommending an appliance your child doesn’t actually need.
When a space maintainer is the right call, we choose the type that fits your child’s specific situation, not a single default option used for every case.
My husband and I, and most importantly our 2 year old son, absolutely loved our first experience at the Montclair Pediatric Dentistry, or any dentist for that matter. Dr. Rebecca and her team were incredibly friendly, warm and thoughtful. We were greeted with a personalized welcome sign and an abundance of toys and games for various ages as well as other fun distractions to keep our son occupied while being examined. Dr. Rebecca truly has an amazing way with children and made our son feel very comfortable with her at all times during the appointment – even when she was flossing his teeth! We are thrilled with the services and would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Rebecca and the Montclair Pediatric Dentistry to our friends and family (which we already have!).
I can't say enough wonderful things about Montclair Pediatric Dentistry! Recently, my daughter had a little mishap and bumped her front teeth. In a moment of panic, I reached out to Dr. Lina's office, and Evelyn at the front desk was incredibly accommodating in getting us in for an appointment right away. From the moment we arrived, Dr. Lina's warm and welcoming demeanor put my daughter at ease. She took the time to thoroughly examine her teeth and was exceptionally informative about what to expect in terms of healing. ... What truly stood out was Dr. Lina's gentle approach. You can genuinely see her passion for pediatric dentistry; she connects with her young patients in a way that makes them feel safe and cared for. ... I am so grateful for the exceptional service we received and will definitely be bringing my other children to Montclair Pediatric Dentistry. I highly recommend Dr. Lina and her team to all my friends and family.
We had a great experience here. We've tried several different pediatric dentists over the years and feel so lucky to have found Montclair Pediatric Dentists! Everyone in the office was warm and helpful. Their office is new, clean, kid-friendly and beautiful. Before we even started, Dr. Lina noticed a food allergy in my daughter's health history and she provided the ingredient list of the materials they use, ensuring safety. The dental hygienist, Viridiana, and Dr. Lina did the most careful and extensive cleaning compared to my daughter's past dentists. They were gentle and explained the process thoroughly. ... Even with a one hour commute, my daughter loved her visit and is happy to go back!
Took my kids to Montclair Pediatric Dentistry this morning and it was a great experience. Dr. Lina was kind, thorough and engaging with my children. The office staff were super friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. The office just opened up in June and it's a really beautiful designed space...I appreciate all the details that make the uneasy experience of going to the dentist very pleasant. Thankful that our other dentist fell out of our insurance network and that we get to have an even better dentist now!
We love Montclair Pediatric Dentistry. We switched here due to an insurance change and were nervous about how our 7 year old would handle it. But they've gone from absolutely dreading the experience to telling us - unprompted - how much they love Dr. Lina and the new office. So happy we're here.
I visited this location and I gotta say my son and I had an A+ experience at Montclair Pediatric Dentistry during our recent visit with Dr. Hsieh. The team was warm, welcoming and understood my son's dental needs. Dr. Hsieh has a kind and gentle way with kids, making dental visits a fun and positive experience. My son left with a big smile and a newfound excitement about brushing his teeth. Highly recommend Montclair for anyone looking for a caring and professional pediatric dentist!
My four year old son had his first appointment today with Montclair Pediatric after deciding to switch from his former office and we were super happy with everything. The waiting area is so intentional and thoughtful with Montessori type toys that encourage learning, tons of sweet books (including some about going to the dentist to help the nervous kiddos) and even coffee for the adults. Dr. Rebecca was very sweet and my son actually enjoyed his visit. The office is clean, calm, fun and inviting. Happy to have found our new pediatric dental office.
Dr. Lina is the best! We had a great experience at her new office. My kids had previously seen Dr. Lina at a different location, and they wanted to continue seeing her as their dentist. It is challenging to find a pediatric dentist that is a good match for my kids, so we were more than happy to follow her to her new location. ... I appreciate Dr. Lina's swift hand skills, her comprehensive approach towards treatments and prevention, and her ability to communicate effectively with both kids and parents. I also appreciate Dr. Lina's efforts to preserve the natural tooth as much as possible, with a focus on prevention and long-term health. ... Also, her office is beautiful and welcoming! My kids really enjoyed their visit. I cannot recommend Dr. Lina enough!
Before or Instead of a Space Maintainer
A space maintainer isn’t always the starting point. These two situations often come first, or replace it entirely.
Pulp Therapy
If a tooth is infected or badly decayed but can still be saved, pulp therapy may keep it in place long enough to fall out on its own, so you may not need a space maintainer at all.
Emergency Dental Care
A knocked-out or badly injured tooth is one of the more common reasons a child ends up needing a space maintainer in the first place. If your child has a dental injury, start here.
Schedule a Consultation Today
If your child has lost a tooth ahead of schedule, an evaluation now can save bigger problems later. Book a consultation, and we’ll let you know exactly what your child needs, whether that’s a space maintainer or nothing at all. Either way, you’ll leave with a clear answer instead of a guess.
Frequently Asked Questions
A few common questions parents ask before their child’s appointment.
What is a space maintainer?
A space maintainer is a small custom appliance that holds open the space left by a tooth that came out too early. It keeps neighboring teeth from drifting into the gap until the permanent tooth underneath is ready to come in.
When are space maintainers needed?
Most often when a baby tooth is lost well ahead of schedule due to decay, injury, or infection, and the permanent tooth isn’t ready to erupt yet. We evaluate the specific tooth and your child’s development to determine whether it’s the right call.
Is a space maintainer always necessary after an early tooth loss?
No, not always. If a tooth was already loose and close to falling out on its own, a space maintainer usually isn’t needed. It depends on how much time is left before the permanent tooth is ready to erupt.
How long will my child need to wear a space maintainer?
It depends on when the permanent tooth comes in. We check it at every visit and remove it as soon as the permanent tooth is ready to take its place.
Are space maintainers comfortable?
Yes, most children adjust to them within a few days. They’re custom-fitted, so they shouldn’t interfere with normal eating, talking, or brushing.
What happens if we don't use a space maintainer when one is recommended?
Neighboring teeth can drift into the open space, which often leads to crowding or alignment problems once the permanent tooth is ready to come in. That can mean more involved orthodontic treatment later than if the space had been held from the start.
What if my child's space maintainer becomes loose or breaks?
Call us right away if that happens, along with any ongoing discomfort or unusual food getting trapped around the appliance. Brushing that area a little more carefully than usual also helps keep it clean between visits.
